Does your Blog Header reflect your Personal Brand?

When I first started blogging, I took a photo of a piece of art I had picked up at a Paris flea market and used that for my header (below).  But then I got tired of looking at it and it seemed busy.  Plus I really didn’t think it was me (too much black in it, I like white space).

So then I started using photographs of daisies.  I love the scent of Casablanca Lilies but Daisies I love because they look happy to me.

In the months that I used daisies as my header I continued to angst about what it should look like.  I knew I wanted an illustration but what?  Then I found Lemon Cherry Blogs and she designed the illustration currently on my header which I totally love.  Even the first one she designed was almost perfect (below):

I liked the polka dots (cause they’re happy :) but it looked too much like I was in bed.  Also it’s impossible to read and pick colour at the same time so the book had to go.  And red is just not my colour, so I asked her to give me a purple shirt as well as some layers in my hair.  And then it was done (below)!

Katie at Lemon Cherry blogs designs headers, my readers might be familiar with this one from Design Ties:

Kelly & Victoria are the pair that write this blog.  I especially loved this video they recently posted:

or this one from Inside Out Style, a fashion blog, one of my daily reads.  One lesson that I carry with me now when shopping for shoes is the difference between a high vamp and a low vamp.  A distinction I did not know until I read this post.

And if you are not as in love with illustrations as I am, she can even do something simple and clean, if that’s your style!  Design Esquire is a lovely and stylish blog.

Here’s a post about bedrooms that have some lovely images like this one below.  Look at those cute paisley pillows.  I can’t sell paisley for the life of me though.  Anytime I show a client fabric with paisley it always ends up in the reject pile!

My good friend Guylaine Rondeau is the highly talented graphic designer that designed my header, check out her blog here:

She was the creative that designed my header to include the illustration to finally come up with a header that is me!

Then in September when I sent out my first monthly newsletter (to subscribe click here, you will also receive a special article that will not be posted on my blog) I asked her to design the header.  What I especially loved was how she incorporated my logo into it.

I have also been through a couple rounds of attempting to incorporate my logo in my blog header but it didn’t work.  Some branding experts say that your blog should reflect your website/logo, but I created the name before I knew that.  Colour me Happy really is me though and I’m so happy with the way it all turned out, at this point I wouldn’t have it any other way.

If you don’t have a personal header on your blog yet, here’s some great advice you should read.
Thank you to Guylaine Rondeau and Katie Lane for being such a huge part of creating my look on the web!  I hope you've enjoyed my 'Dream Team' posts this week!

  1. I've gone through different ideas myself, Maria. It takes some time to get something that really depicts you and what you want to come across. I do love yours, I like headers that have an illustration of the person {even though we don't always look like that illustration!} with some tools of the trade. I think you could just look at a header like that and know what the person does.

  2. I've been noticing many blog changes...so many are looking so proffessional...sometimes I think of having someone help me with one...then I usually find something else to do, and forget it.

    Story of my life!

  3. My sister hates paisley. She calls it "little spermies"...and so I can't see it without laughing and thinking about that! And, I actually like paisley!

  7. I too feel my blog heading does not really reflect the true image of me. Thanks for the jump start to get moving on this. Love all the information you share. Your blog is truly one of my favorites.

  8. Great ideas, Maria. Unfortunately, my header does not reflect me very well. What it does reflect is my lack of computer graphics skills! I desperately need a redesign, have found a designer I like, and will get on it asap!
    Love yours btw... very happy!

  9. It's so great getting a header that is really you! I know when I was working to get mine right we tried lots of different looks - in fact Katie made my header girl have my haircut and eye shape! We also managed to get my logo in there too - on the side of a huge building - I like that - something for me to dream about.

  13. Maria,

Great blog posts this week. When we know better we do better it's human nature. Great to experience the thoughts behind the decision process. I like them all and we change with the speed at which we grow.

  14. I love your illustrated header Maria. I remember when you posted about changing it. I have been thinking about my branding alot lately, so your post is very timely as usual. I think we evolve as our business changes and we get more clear on what we want it to be. There are so many creative, talented people out there including the ones you've found for your dream team.

  20. Wow...didn't know you had such big dream team and what it takes to put it all together - and I thought you did everything yourself! :)

I have three bold paisley pillows on my bed that I found at Pottery Barn a while ago - charcoal & cream. I like them.

  21. hi maria!
to set things straight: i looooove paisley! some more than others, but those little cushions are totally adorable!
(even if some people, like rj, think they look like little sperms)

and thank you for your acknowledgement! it made me think of my own dream team: my amazing web developer who actually care about the design, my advertising writer who always manage to bring some wit to her headlines, and so many more...

i think i will use this as an inspiration to acknowledge them as well!
just like love, you can never give too much of it, right?

    xoxo
